Ana Martin-Villalba is a Division Head at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ). Her lab explores the compelling hypothesis that cancer in adults represents a failed attempt to regenerate. Successful regeneration hinges on three critical components: 1) Effective Inflammatory Response: Ensuring the injured site responds appropriately to initiate healing. 2) Robust Immune System: Maintaining a vigilant defense against aberrant cell growth. 3) Healthy Population of Resident or Facultative Stem Cells: Providing the necessary cellular resources for tissue regeneration. Her research is dedicated to understanding and enhancing these components to promote effective regeneration and prevent the onset of cancerous growths.
