DKFZ
Heidelberg, Germany

Ana Martin-Villalba is a Division Head at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ). Her lab explores the compelling hypothesis that cancer in adults represents a failed attempt to regenerate. Successful regeneration hinges on three critical components: 1) Effective Inflammatory Response: Ensuring the injured site responds appropriately to initiate healing. 2) Robust Immune System: Maintaining a vigilant defense against aberrant cell growth. 3) Healthy Population of Resident or Facultative Stem Cells: Providing the necessary cellular resources for tissue regeneration. Her research is dedicated to understanding and enhancing these components to promote effective regeneration and prevent the onset of cancerous growths. Ana Martin-Villalba is the recipient of the prestigious Leibniz Prize and elected member of EMBO.
